Public Hearing on the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) for K-IV Augmentation Works

The Sindh Environment Protection Agency meticulously organized a Public Hearing on the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) for the K-IV Augmentation Works, a crucial component of the Karachi Water and Sewerage Services Improvement Project (KWSSIP). The event garnered active participation from various sectors, including civil society, the general public, and academia.

During the proceedings, the project consultants provided a detailed presentation on the K-IV Augmentation Project profile. They elucidated on the initiative’s significance, which revolves around enhancing Karachi’s water supply infrastructure. The core strategy involves interconnecting the K4 Treatment Plants with the existing water network, resulting in a substantial increase of 260 MGD in water supply capacity. The carefully devised design focuses on connecting key nodal points such as the Pipri System, NEK/COD System, and Hub System.

Within the framework of K-IV Phase-I, the project strategically augments connectivity at these nodal points, allocating 65 MGD for Pipri, 130 MGD for NEK/COD, and 65 MGD for Hub. This targeted approach aims to significantly improve water supply in various districts, including Malir, Korangi, Cantonment, South, Central, District West, North Karachi, Surjani, North Nazimabad, and SITE Area.

Beyond addressing immediate water demands, the K-IV Augmentation Project is designed to bridge the gap between demand and supply through a well-integrated system for bulk transmission and distribution. This comprehensive initiative not only seeks to enhance water accessibility but also aims to fortify the financial health of the Karachi Water & Sewerage Corporation (KW&SC), ensuring sustainable water management for the city of Karachi. During the public inquiry, the panel responded to queries by emphasizing the project’s commitment to maintaining high social, economic, and environmental standards, assuring the public that it will effectively cater to the water needs of Karachi residents.
