In a collaborative endeavor to address the pressing demand for water and sewerage services within marginalized communities, the Karachi Water and Sewerage Services Improvement Project (KWSSIP) has embarked on initiatives in Soba Nagar, one of the two carefully selected Katchi Abadis. The inauguration of water and sewerage schemes in Soba Nagar marked a significant milestone, with Mayor Karachi Barrister Murtaza Wahab and Project Director-KWSSIP Mr. Muhammad Usman Moazzam leading the ceremony.
This undertaking is specifically tailored for selected low-income Katchi Abadis/informal settlements, focusing on those that meet stringent criteria outlined by the World Bank. To facilitate this effort, a dedicated Katchi Abadi Cell, supported by KWSSIP, has been established. This cell is actively conducting thorough field surveys, meticulously compiling a comprehensive database of these Katchi Abadis. The process involves a detailed analysis of existing water supply lines and sewer networks, as well as an assessment of the future Water and Sanitation Services needs in these areas. Extensive consultative sessions with local communities have already been conducted to gather firsthand insights and raise awareness about the potential benefits of the project.
This sub-project under KWSSIP is not only geared towards infrastructural enhancements in selected Katchi Abadis but also places a strong emphasis on effective social mobilization. It includes capacity building for local community organizations through NGOs that will play pivotal role in revenue collection. Moreover, these organizations will actively promote responsible practices, such as advocating for safe water usage and proper sewage disposal. Door-to-door campaigns for community education and involvement are also part of the initiative, ensuring a holistic approach to community development and empowerment.
