In a decisive move to enhance public health and ensure access to clean drinking water, the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KW&SC), with the support of the World Bank, has launched a citywide Water Quality Testing Campaign 2025. The initiative, undertaken under the Project Development Objective (PDO-1), is part of the corporation’s broader water sector reform agenda and reflects its commitment to improving service delivery, transparency, and institutional capacity.
Commencing on 1st July and concluding its first phase on 24th July 2025, the campaign is being implemented under the leadership of KW&SC CEO Mr. Ahmad Ali Siddiqui and Project Director of KWSSIP Mr. Muhammad Usman Moazzam. It involved the collection and testing of 177 water samples from critical points across Karachi’s distribution system, including pumping stations, reservoirs, and filtration plants. The exercise was closely monitored by senior KW&SC officials and the Chief Chemist to maintain high standards of accuracy and data integrity.
The campaign aims to identify and mitigate sources of water contamination, establish baseline quality data, and support evidence-based planning for infrastructure improvements. State-of-the-art testing equipment and digital tracking systems have been used to ensure real-time analysis and enhance reporting accuracy. This proactive initiative addresses the longstanding challenge of water contamination in Karachi, where aging infrastructure and population growth have contributed to the prevalence of waterborne diseases.
The campaign is a testament to the strong development partnership between KW&SC and the World Bank, which continues to support urban resilience and infrastructure modernization in Karachi. In addition to immediate testing outcomes, KW&SC has outlined long-term goals including the integration of sustainable practices in water treatment, the expansion of digital monitoring systems, and greater public engagement on water safety awareness.
By identifying unsafe sources and enabling timely corrective measures, the campaign is expected to directly contribute to public health and reduce the incidence of waterborne illnesses. CEO Ahmad Ali Siddiqui emphasized that the initiative is not only about testing water but about transforming the entire system to deliver reliable and safe water services to every household in Karachi.
The launch of this campaign marks a major milestone in KW&SC’s journey toward becoming a modern, responsive utility and reaffirms its vision of securing a healthier and more resilient future for the citizens of Karachi.
